Buying Clout: How to get pre-approved for a loan
How much can you afford?

Before looking at homes, its a good idea to get pre-approved for a mortgage. Pre-approval serves as a commitment to lend a specific amount based on the information you provide. It helps you decide how much home you can afford. And just as important, pre-approval gives you buying clout with a seller.

Getting pre-approved requires that a mortgage lender verify your financial information. When applying, youll most likely need to provide the following:

  • W-2 forms for the past two years
  • Federal tax returns for the past two years
  • Last two months bank statements
  • Long-term debt information such as credit cards, auto loans, etc.
